Guest post by Dr. Margie Ierlan, assistant professor of marketing:
The Madden School’s MKT-440 Sports Consortium class traveled to Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome last Friday February 1 to get a behind-the-scenes look at the operations of a large Division 1 athletic facility. The class was hosted by Pete Sala and Sue Edson.
Mr. Sala is the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Facility Operations and Carrier Dome Managing Director. He is responsible for all athletics department facilities and operations, including the Lampe Athletics Complex, Carrier Dome, Hookway Practice Fields, Softball Stadium, Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse, and Drumlins Tennis Club. The class was given a firsthand account of how all of these athletic facilities are run. For example, students heard about the amount of work and hours that go into making sure the Dome is ready for a basketball game one day and a lacrosse game the next.
Mrs. Edson, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications, is responsible for the athletic communications operation, which distributes information for all varsity sports to appropriate organizations, manages the department website SUAthletics.com. She also acts as a liaison between the media and the SU coaching staffs and student-athletes.
The marketing students came away with a deep appreciation for all the behind-the-scenes activities involved in making sure things go smoothly so fans can enjoy the event they are attending.
Many professionals from the sports industry will visit the Sports Consortium class this semester including Neil Olshey, General Manager of the Portland TrailBlazers, Barbara Marino McHugh, Marketing Director at Major League Baseball, and Mike Ondrejko, Chief Operating Officer of Legends Sales and Marketing.
